This ancient church is regarded as the Venetian Pantheon, as many doges and other eminent people are buried here. If its facade may look bare and undecorated - typical characteristics of the gothic style - the inside is enriched by many art works by Venetian artists like Vittore Carpaccio and Giovanni Bellini.

It is one of the largest churches in Venice. It is a gothic building and is dedicated to Giovanni and Paolo, the martyrs of the Early Christian church in Rome (not the two apostles).

It is the Dominician church of Venice: the construction of this church was started at the end of the XIV° century by Dominican friars. It was completed at the beginning of the 15th century.

The large interior contains many funerary monuments and paintings as well as the Madonna della Pace, a miraculous Byzantine statue housed in its own chapel in the south aisle.
