This architectural masterpiece is the product of two of the greatest minds in Venetian art: the main structure of the building was planned and constructed by Palladio in the sixteenth century, while the wonderful facade was created a century later by Baldassarre Longhena. The church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti, today known as Ospedaletto, was constructed in 1575 on the site of a hospital for the poor. The church was probably designed by Palladio, but it was constructed by Baldassare Longhena.

Over time, it received huge amounts of financial aid from noble families. Thanks to them, the church is home to works by Tiepolo, Loth and Liberi. The Ospedalletto is also very famous for its experienced music school, which includes a chorus of young orphaned girls. The room where they sing was frescoed by Guarana and Mengozzi Colonna.
