Venice Academy Gallery

If you love art, and particularly admire the Venetian school, you cannot miss this museum. Nowhere else will you find a richer collection of paintings by masters like TitianTintoretto, Carpaccio, GIovanni Bellini and Giorgione. The famous drawing of the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo is also kept here.

The Academy Gallery is a gallery located in the south part of the Grand Canal. The museum is named after "Ponte dell'Accademia" (Bridge of the Academy), which is located nearby.

It was founded in 1750 by the Venetian Senate who wanted to create a school of painting, sculpture and architecture, similar to the official institutions in Rome, Milan and Bologna. In 1819 it was formalized as an institution to study art restoration. It has had many famous teachers like Tiepolo, Hayez, Alberto Viani and Emilio Vedova.

During the Napoleonic Empire, many Italian works were confiscated and taken to Paris. This also happened to many churches and cloisters.

The Accademia Galleries are an important collection of venetian patinings from Century 14th to 18th, including masterpieces of the most famous masters like Bellini, Giorgione, Carpaccio, Tiziano, Tintoretto, Veronese and Tiepolo.
After the suppression of religious congregations and public venetian magistratures, an enormous quantity of art works was confiscated. A selection of masterpieces was sent to the seat of the central power in Paris to be shown in the Louvre Museum.
The link between the Academy Galleries and Venice is very deep: rooms keep many works from churches, schools and public magistratures that help the public understand solutions created by painters for a specific destination and meaning of paintings. Some of the masterpieces you can see here are the only testimony remained from churches destroyed in the Napoleonic period. Another part of the museum's treasure make some of the most famous paintings of private collections that were generously donated.
