Correr Museum

Correr Museum in Venice

The Correr Museum was born in the nineteenth century and has been moved twice since then, as the ever-growing collection became too large for the rooms it was originally housed in.

Its current position in the Napoleonic wing of the Procuratie, in the heart of the city, in its most symbolic square, gives the museum the prestige it deserves. The Correr Museum is located in St. Mark’s Square with the entrance in the Napoleonic wing of the building. This part of the Square was designed by Antolini and Giuseppe Soli and Lorenzo Santi. The entrance of the museum not only reflects the monumental architecture of the Napoleonic period but also the neoclassical style of the Asburgo.

The art collection was donated to Venice by Teodoro Correr in 1830, and today, thanks to many more donations, it constitutes the main Venetian Civic Museum.

The museum begins with the striking Napoleonic Wing, neoclassical rooms which were once the Venetian Palace of the French Emperor, of the Asburgo and of the King of Italy. Here you can find statues and bas-reliefs by Antonio Canova. Furthermore, you’ll find a collection from the Renaissance period (works by Riccio, Roccatagliata, Campagna, Aspetti).

The second floor has masterpieces by Antonello da Messina, Carpaccio, Bellini and Lotto that are displayed to illustrate the History of Venice during the apex of its glory. The Museum of Risorgimento, the Museum Library and the Cabinet of Prints and Drawings are associated with the Correr Museum.
